Test a new segment with one batch ten emails before the rest

A new segment is a guess until someone answers. Send one batch of ten, read what comes back and only then decide how to mail the rest.

Why test before the whole segment

Every new segment starts with assumptions: that these companies need what you sell, that the addresses are right and that your message makes sense to them. Some of that will be wrong. A way to test a cold email campaign without burning the whole segment is to send one small batch first.

Gentle by design. Campaigns go out in batches of 10, and you can pause after any batch and continue later. That makes a first batch a natural test: ten companies get the message, the rest of the segment waits until you have looked at what came back.

You decide what counts as a good sign; Riftjaw sends the batch and keeps every reply and status on the company record. We do not promise a result from ten emails. It is a small sample, so read it as a hint, not as proof.

What one batch can tell you

Whether the addresses hold

Bounces in the first ten say something about the source or the import. Look at that part of the list before you send more.

Whether the message lands

A reply, even a no, shows the reader understood what you offer. Questions in the replies show what was unclear.

Whether the segment fits

Answers like "we do not do that" or "wrong person" tell you the segment or the role needs work, not the wording.

Whether the placeholders work

Read the sent emails. A fallback value per placeholder means no gaps when a field is empty, but check that the sentence still reads well.

Run the test in three steps

1

Pick ten that represent the segment

Choose a mix from the segment, not only the best-looking companies, so the test says something about the rest.

2

Send one batch and pause

Start the campaign, let the first batch of 10 go out and pause the rest.

3

Read, adjust, continue

Read the replies and bounces on the records, change the message or the segment if needed, then continue or stop.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test a cold email campaign?

Send the first batch of a new segment, about ten emails, and pause. Read the replies and bounces, adjust the message or the segment, and only then send to the rest.

Are ten emails enough to judge a campaign?

No, not as proof. Ten emails give you a hint: whether the addresses hold, whether the message is understood and whether the segment fits. Use it to fix obvious problems, not to measure a rate.

Can I pause a campaign after the first batch?

Yes. Campaigns go out in batches of 10, and you can pause after any batch and continue later from where you stopped.

What should I change if nobody replies to the first batch?

Look at the segment first: were these the right companies and the right role? Then look at the message: is the reason to write specific? Change one thing and send the next batch. More in measure results per segment.

Do I need credits?

No. There are no credits and no cost per record: a flat price per plan, and the size of your list does not change the price.

What is Riftjaw?

Riftjaw is a B2B lead database you own: import the companies you collect, keep every record with its source, sort them into segments and reach them by email in small batches. Each account runs on its own private server with its own database.
