Bounces explained

Where cold email bounces come from in a small list you own

A bounce is an address that did not accept your email. Most bounces on a small list have a handful of causes, and you can see most of them coming.

A bounce is information

A bounce means the receiving server did not accept your email. A hard bounce says the address does not exist or never will; a soft bounce says something got in the way this time, such as a full mailbox. A high bounce rate in cold email is bad for your sending domain, so it is worth knowing where the bounces come from.

On a small list you own, the causes are usually not a mystery. Old records, typing errors, addresses that were guessed and domains that accept everything account for most of them. Because each record keeps its source file and import date, you can often see which part of the list the bounces came from.

We say it plainly: Riftjaw does not verify email addresses. An address derived from a company domain is a guess, and it is marked as derived so you can treat it as one. If you need every address checked before sending, a dedicated verification tool does that job.

The usual causes

Old records

People change jobs and companies close or rename. A list that sat untouched for a year has more addresses that no longer exist.

Typing and import errors

A missing letter, a space in the address or a column that slipped during the import. Clean these before the first send.

Guessed addresses

An address built from a name and a domain may not exist. Riftjaw marks it as derived, so you can send to those records last or leave them out. More on that under email from a domain.

Catch-all domains and full mailboxes

Some domains accept every address at first and bounce later; some mailboxes are full for a while. These are harder to predict, so watch them in the first batch.

Keep bounces low in three steps

1

Start with the freshest part

Filter on the import date and send the newest, typed or collected records first.

2

Send in small batches

Campaigns go out in batches of 10. Pause when bounces show up in one batch and look at that part of the list before you continue.

3

Mark what bounced

Give records that bounced their own status or tag, so they stay out of the next campaign until you have a better address.

Frequently asked questions

What causes a high bounce rate in cold email?

Mostly old records, typing errors, guessed addresses and catch-all domains. On a small list you can usually find the part of the list where the bounces came from by looking at the source and import date of the records.

What is the difference between a hard and a soft bounce?

A hard bounce means the address does not exist or cannot receive mail. A soft bounce means a temporary problem, such as a full mailbox. Treat a hard bounce as a reason to stop mailing that address.

Does Riftjaw verify email addresses before sending?

No. Riftjaw does not verify addresses. Addresses derived from a domain are marked as derived, because they are a guess. If you need verification, use a dedicated tool before you import.

Do small batches help with bounces?

They help you notice them early. Sending in batches of 10 lets you pause and look at a part of the list before the rest of the segment is mailed. Deliverability basics are in this guide.

Do I need credits?

No. There are no credits and no data tax: enrichment runs automatically without a per-row meter.

What is Riftjaw?

Riftjaw is a self-hosted B2B lead pipeline: collect companies from any public list, enrich them for free, put them on the map and reach them - from one dashboard you host yourself.
