Who owns the lead data you upload? controller and processor, plainly
When you upload a lead list, you decide what happens with it. Here is what controller and processor mean in plain words, and what that does and does not do for you.
- No credits, no data tax
- You own your data
- Map included
- GDPR-first
Two roles, in plain words
Data protection law uses two words for the parties around personal data. The controller decides why and how the data is used. The processor handles the data on behalf of the controller and only as the controller instructs. For lead data you upload, the question who is the lead data controller and who the processor has a simple answer.
You are the controller, Riftjaw is the processor. You decide which companies and contacts go on your list, whom you email and what you say. Riftjaw stores and processes the data for you, so you can import, segment, send and export it. The details are in our privacy statement and terms.
Your data stays yours. Every account runs on its own private server with its own database, not in a shared pool, and you can export your list to CSV at any time, also on the day you leave.
What the roles mean in practice
You decide whom you email
As controller you choose the people on your list and the reason you write to them. That choice, and the message, stay yours.
We do not promise compliance
Riftjaw does not make you GDPR compliant by itself. It gives you tools, such as unsubscribes that are skipped in later campaigns; whether your outreach is allowed is your call. Read more on GDPR.
Your list is not our database
Your records sit in your own database on your own server. They are not added to a shared pool and not rented out to others.
Leaving is part of the deal
Export the whole list, a segment or the original import file to CSV whenever you want. When you delete your account, your account data is removed.
Three things to do as controller
Know where your data came from
Every record keeps its source file and import date, so you can say where a contact came from if someone asks.
Decide your reason to write
Write down why you contact this group of companies. The basics are in GDPR and cold email; this page is not legal advice.
Act on unsubscribes and requests
Unsubscribes are skipped in every later campaign. A request to delete a contact is something you handle on the record.
Frequently asked questions
Who owns the lead data I upload to Riftjaw?
You do. You are the controller of the data you upload, and Riftjaw is the processor that stores and processes it for you. You can export it to CSV at any time.
What is the difference between a data controller and a processor?
The controller decides why and how personal data is used. The processor handles the data for the controller and follows its instructions. With a lead list you upload, you are the controller.
Does Riftjaw make my outreach GDPR compliant?
No. Riftjaw gives you tools such as unsubscribes that are skipped in later campaigns and the source on every record, but you decide whom you email and why. This page is not legal advice.
Is my lead list shared with other customers?
No. Every account has its own private server and its own database. Your list is not part of a shared pool.
Do I need credits?
No. There are no credits and no data tax: enrichment runs automatically without a per-row meter.
